How to Connect When Conditions of Disconnection Exist

About the Event
During this presentation, Drew Horowitz, MA, LADC, LPCC, CIP and Tom Beckers, LADC, CBIS will provide attendees with an
in-depth overview of intervention, discussing the key concepts behind motivating individuals to enter treatment for substance
use disorder, highlighting ways to overcome disconnection within individuals and families. This presentation will have an
emphasis in working with populations experiencing cognitive deficits. Through anecdotes, best practices and experiential
activities, participants will establish a base knowledge of how to engage and work with skillful behavior related to cooccurring
disorder treatment.
Training Objectives
– Participants will be able to describe substance use disorder around individuals who are reluctant to seek treatment
– Participants will be able to recognize how one makes decisions while actively using psychoactive substances and how the substances interfere with logical thought patterns
– Participants will be able to identify aspects of cognitive deficits
– Participants Participants will be able to understand ways to modify treatment delivery
About the Presenters
Drew Horowitz, MA, LADC, LPCC, CIP is a nationally known and well recognized clinical interventionist and therapist. Drew Horowitz brings a vast range of expertise working with and overseeing clinical teams in the behavioral health field. With over a decade of experience, he has worked with a multitude of populations providing drug & alcohol detoxification, clinical case management, individual therapy, continuing care coordination, intensive outpatient services, consultation, intervention, coaching, and mental health counseling.
Tom Beckers, LADC, CBIS has worked in the field of chemical health/substance use disorder treatment for 18 years, including Vinland National Center for the past 16 years. Tom has co-authored a curriculum that adapts mindfulness practices for people with cognitive deficits and provided professional and community-based trainings on substance use disorders and brain injury, partnering with entities such as the University of Minnesota and the Brain Injury Alliance of Minnesota.

- CEU applications have been submitted to the Boards of Behavioral Health, Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy. 1.5 CEUS will be available. This event will not include ethics or cultural competency CEUs.
- Attendees will be issued a CEU certificate upon completion of a post-event survey and post-test. Certificates will not be issued on-site at the event.
