ABOUT THE TRAINING:
During this interactive presentation, Drew Horowitz, MA, LADC, LPCC, CIP and John Curtiss, Co-Founder and CEO of The Retreat, will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of the integration of traditional 12-step recovery approaches with modern advances in substance use and mental health treatment. This presentation will dive into the history and principles of the 12-step recovery model and examine how it can be effectively combined with evidence-based modalities to enhance outcomes for individuals with substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants will gain practical strategies for incorporating both time-honored traditions and cutting-edge techniques into their clinical practice.
OBJECTIVES:
– Participants will understand the principles and traditions of the 12-step recovery model, and how they contribute to its enduring popularity and efficacy. – Participants will explore modern advances in substance use and mental health treatment, including evidence-based modalities such as cognitive- behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
– Participants will identify points of intersection between the 12-step recovery model and modern treatment approaches, recognizing the value of integrating these modalities for optimal outcomes.
– Participants will discuss practical strategies for incorporating 12-step principles and traditions into evidence-based treatment plans.
– Participants will gain insight into the challenges and potential pitfalls of integrating the 12-step model and modern treatment approaches and develop strategies for addressing these issues in clinical practice.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
Drew Horowitz, MA, LADC, LPCC, CIP is a nationally known and well recognized clinical interventionist and therapist. Drew Horowitz brings a vast range of expertise working with and overseeing clinical teams in the behavioral health field. With over a decade of experience, he has worked with a multitude of populations providing drug & alcohol detoxification, clinical case management, individual therapy, continuing care coordination, intensive outpatient services, consultation, intervention, coaching, and mental health counseling.
John Curtiss,
On June 21, 2023, The Retreat marked its 25th Anniversary. In this time, it has served more than 30,000 men, women and families in their recovery journeys, and is a leading light among the network of recovery services and resources in the Twin Cities and upper Midwest.
The Retreat’s evolution and growth reflects the vision, steady hand and stewardship of Curtiss, who has more than 42 years of service to organizations that help people struggling with alcoholism and addiction. Prior to starting The Retreat, he served at the Hazelden Foundation for more than 19 years in a variety of roles including: vice president of Hazelden’s National Continuum; executive director of Outreach Services; executive director of Fellowship Club, and; unit supervisor of two of Hazelden’s primary treatment units. Curtiss led the creation of Hazelden care centers in New York, Chicago and West Palm Beach. He has a master’s degree in Human and Health Services Administration from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, and is a graduate of Hazelden’s Counselor Training Program.
Service is core to Curtiss’ work with individuals and families looking to live in recovery, and also the greater recovery community. He has served on the Community of Recovering People board since its inception, as well as the board of Minnesota’s Sobriety High School. Curtiss is past president of the Association of Halfway House Alcohol Programs of North America, and is former chair and currently vice president of the Minnesota Association of Sober Homes. He has been on the guest faculty for Rutgers University’s Summer School for Advanced Addiction Studies, and co-authored the Hazelden Foundation publication, “Letting Go”.
This service extends to Curtiss’ firm belief that recovery is a gift to be given away. He has led the work with organizations around the world who want to replicate The Retreat model of care, and today there are 12 locations modeled after The Retreat operating in Sioux Falls, SD; Nashville, TN; Vero Beach, FL; Austin, TX; Beaverton, OR; Waterford, IRL; Hong Kong; Sydney, AZ, and; Auckland, NZ.
